Q. How do I ship a perishable package with dry ice?
A.  

Air Shipments:

Domestic Air (non-Medical) – No Dangerous Goods Agreement Needed

Net Weight of Dry Ice 5.5 lbs. (2.5 kg) or less

Mark the box with a marker with the following information (no dangerous goods labels required):

  • Dry ice
  • Net weight of dry ice in lbs. or kg
  • An indication of what is being cooled by the dry ice (i.e. meat, ice cream, etc.)
  • No other marks/labels are required

Net Weight of Dry Ice Greater than 5.5 lbs. (2.5 kg) 

  • UPS thermal label must have the markings below:

o   UN1845

o   Dry ice

o   Number of packages

o   Net weight of dry ice in lbs. or kg

o   Class 9 (must be on label if you don’t attach a Class 9 diamond label on the box) –
to order Class 9 diamond labels:
D.O.T. Labels – Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods, 4 x 4″ S-196 – Uline)

  • You must mark the box (with a marker) with the following:
    • UN1845
    • Dry ice
    • The net weight of the dry ice (must match thermal label/alternate document – for example, 10 lbs)

Ground Shipments:

Dry Ice, when using ground shipping (48 contiguous states), is not regulated and can be shipped without any marks/labels on the outer package.
